Automatic – Smart Driving Assistant

November 26, 2013

Automatic, the smart driving startup that builds an accessory for just about any vehicle, is expanding its list of retail partners beyond Apple thanks to a new deal with Amazon. That means the car will be available to a whole new group of customers, thanks to a distribution arrangement with the world’s largest online retailer.

Automatic’s Link plugs into a car’s ODB-11 port, which is generally going unused on any vehicle between service spots, but which essentially provides access to the car’s central nervous system and can relate back a huge amount of information about your vehicle and its travels, including fuel consumption, detailed information about “check engine” and other service lights that appear on your dashboard, and can also detect crashes and send automatic calls for help.

The deal for Automatic means retail presence that could help it become more than just a niche product for tech enthusiasts. And that could be good news for the connected car space in general: Our own Chris Velazco reviewed the product and found that it helped make him more conscious of his own driving habits, which could in turn lead to a number of other use cases for that new awareness and newly unearthed information. With other accessories feeding from the pipe Automatic provides, we could see all kinds of different incarnations of intelligent driving accessories, but first Automatic’s Link needs to reach critical mass. Imperia GP has Smart Car CO2 Emissions, Ferrari-like Performance

March 2, 2011

First seen at the Belgian Auto Show last month (yes, one does exist), automaker Imperia Automobiles has released full details and pricing of their new revival model. Known as the Imperia GP, the model looks like something that was created by Wiesmann or Morgan. But forget the styling, the real fun lies in what powers the GP. Power for the Imperia GP comes from a 1.6L 4-cylinder inline turbo engine making 207-hp with a maximum torque of 184 lb-ft. The engine is mated to 134-hp electric-motor that gets its fuel from Li-Polymer batteries. 0-62 mph in hybrid mode (with the engine and motor working together) comes in just 4 seconds. In electric-mode, the Imperia GP can hit 62 mph in 6 seconds. When the battery is fully charged, the Imperia GP can also travel on electric-power alone for 43.5 miles. Pretty interesting.

As described by Imperia: “a vehicle whose consumption and CO2 emissions are comparable to those of a Smart ForTwo, whilst still guaranteeing outstanding performance easily rivalling makes with an established reputation, like Ferrari or Porsche.”

The Imperia GP will be available from 2012 with prices starting at 89,950 euros ($122,273 USD). The first units will be a special-edition model with prices starting at 120,360 euros ($163,611 USD). Read the full review with more photos, videos, and words here.

February 19, 2011

Falling in love is a rewarding experience, especially when you are behind the wheel of a BMW. The feeling gets even better when it’s all carbon fiber. The BMW M5 has been earlier seen with gilded makeovers, matte paint jobs and vinyl wraps, but this is the first time a BMW has received a carbon fiber paint job. The black carbon fiber wrapped E60 BMW M5 was seen in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
