Happy Madison Picks Up Patrick Jean’s Popular ‘Pixels’ Short

Patrick Jean's Pixels

I never featured it at the time, but better late than never! Filmmaker Patrick Jean and production house OneMoreProduction created a short film called Pixels that went insanely viral last month when it took off on Twitter and other websites, like SlashFilm. Following in the footsteps of filmmaker Federico Alvarez and his viral short film Panic Attack, Nikki Finke’s Deadline is reporting that Happy Madison, Adam Sandler’s production company, and Columbia Pictures are “in early talks” to develop a full-length Ghostbusters-like movie based on Jean’s sci-fi invasion video. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check it out embedded below.

Details are a bit sparse right now, but Deadline says Happy Madison optioned the rights to Jean’s work, but Columbia hasn’t actually signed any deals yet. I think they’re guessing that because of their relationship with Columbia/Sony, it’ll happen eventually. The only other tidbit they mention is that the idea is (obviously) to make Pixels in 3D. As totally awesome as this video is (check it out below), I just don’t think a production company with recent credits like Strange Wilderness, The House Bunny, Bedtime Stories, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and the awful looking Grown Ups, should be developing a movie based on a short that, even being only two minutes long, was already much better than all of those movies. But I guess we never know. Thoughts?
