Europe’s best architectural structures by night

August 17, 2013

Note from uploader: Nightvision is a celebration of the brilliance and diversity of architecture found across Europe. Over the course of three months I journeyed with a friend through 36 cities in 21 countries with the ambition of capturing some of the greatest European structures in a new and unique way. Comprised of thousands of carefully taken photographs, strung together and stabilized in post-production, Nightvision aims to inspire appreciation for these man-made landmarks. Nightvision would not have been possible without my Kickstarter backers, the support of the American University of Paris community, everyone who helped along the way, and of course, those who designed and built these architectural masterpieces.

SOG Knives – The Arcitech

August 14, 2013

SOG Knives – Trusted by US Special Forces teams for decades.

Arcitech Damascus: To create, a truly unique experience and first for SOG we started with one of our finest knives, the Arcitech. Then we procured a stunning Japanese Damascus that uses a core of VG-10 and 15 layers of Nickel and stainless steel on either side. The steel is forged and folded again and again to produce this striking pattern. Then finally the knife is acid etched to bring the pattern up clearly (carbon and nickel become black). $624.00

The Arcitech ushers in our Platinum line with exquisite high-end collectibility. Combining technical excellence with a spirited new design, the Arcitech has that trait that is so elusive… harmony. A mirror polished san mai (VG-10 core laminated with 420J2 stainless steel) exotic blade moves smooth as silk and mechanically effortless thanks to our very special Arc-Lock and Abalone jeweled thumb stud. The titanium bolsters meet old school jigged bone handles in a rare and beautiful combination. The color of the jigged bone handles vary in color from a deep maroon to flame yellow and black making each knife a unique piece. Investment collectable and very limited production. $500.00

Algae Lamp Absorbs 200-Times More Carbon Dioxide Than Trees, Doesn’t Require Electricity

March 4, 2013

French biochemist Pierre Calleja has invented an innovative algae lamp, and it’s claimed to absorb 200-times more CO2 than trees, at the rate of 1-ton annually, or what a tree absorbs over its entire lifetime. Pierre has basically developed a lighting system that requires no electricity for power. Instead, it draws carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and uses it to produce light as well as oxygen as a byproduct. The key ingredient? Algae. There are certain types of algae that can feed off of organic carbon as well as sunlight, and in the process produce carbohydrate energy for themselves as well as oxygen as a waste product.

According to Geek.com, “Cajella’s lamps consist of algae-filled water along with a light and battery system. During the day the algae produce energy from sunlight that is then stored in the batteries. Then at night the energy is used to power the light. However, as the algae can also produce energy from carbon, sunlight isn’t required for the process to work. That means such lights can be placed where there is no natural light and the air will effectively be cleaned on a daily basis.”
